Old and Modern Careers

Our story today about the jobs in the past and present. Old people always says that we are lazy and this generation is not working or sacrifice enough. We see that nowadays we are working but in different ways to achieve the best life we can have.

If you want to remember the past then you have to visit the Heritage and Diving Villages.

Um Rashid sadly said that no one is visiting them in the hot season, she was happy to see us. She said that this girls' generation is not keen on handcraft like old women are. " The best things they like to do is playing with their mobiles and I pads" Said Um Rashid.

Old Souq is a remark of old marketing style, the Souq is contain of different shops that are made from the palm's leaves " Saaf" and the lighting mainly is "Fannar"

Dubai Museum is the place to live our culture, to see our past, to think of the positives of old life, to see the differences and thank God on the comfort that we are in.

"Al Bazzar" local word for the seller of herbals and spices, this job concentrating on mixing herbals and selling them as medication or food ingredients.

"Al Sayegh" or the person sells gold, traveling here and there to bring the best gold and silver items to sell them in the country. Until this time local women like to ware Bahraini and Indian Gold.

Fabric Seller in the same way traveling to many places to get the best fabrics that suits the local seasons. The main fabrics that was used in old times is Indian Kemri and Cashmere fabrics.

"Raee el Dekan" we still use this word to the person selling food and house stuff. In this photo we can see that the man is selling the famous drink until this day " Vimto", Lux soap, Custard, Dalda margarine and many other stuff that the old generation needed and we still use.

"Al Mutawaa" the most important career at that time because he was the teacher for reading and writing. After the children learn to read and write he teach them maths.

" Al Tammar" the one selling dates in all its stages, Khalal the first stage of date before it can be eatable because some families transfer it to date syrup " Dibs". The second stage is "Rutab" the eatable dates, and the most famous one " Tamer" which is very mature and sweet Dates.

Some of the main jobs in the Gulf was searching for Pearls and Trading and these jobs needed large ships to sail in the deep seas.

The Diver, the one who leaves his family for more than 3 months working in the deep seas to collect the  precious pearls.

I remember the first class with Mr. Dwight, he said that the first female entrepreneur in the UAE was our grand grand mothers who were buying and selling to provide a good life for their children. Some women in the past were buying the fishes from the fishermen at the sea and selling it inside the city.

Selling fishes can't be possible without the nets or " Gargoor". It was one of the difficult careers in old time because it takes long time and needs concentration.

Mr. Sauod The director of HCT-Dubai, admitted that old generation faced a lot of challenges to bring us to this elegant life. He said " we should put in considerations that we also have mental and modern challenges in the same difficulties as the old people who physically fought for their daily living".

Female librarians in Sharjah Public Library, agree with Mr. Saoud in saying that we have to provide for our selves and families the best life and that will happens only if we helped our husbands and parents.

Ms. Nujood says that current days women have include their selves in many jobs that are similar to old women's careers, in old time women didn't work in police but instead they fought in many wars.

Ms. Khadija Behzad, a faculty member in HCT-Dubai, working and teaching students is one of the best things she did and she will be happy to do. Similarly the old women tailoring and making Talli made them pass the time where they missed their husbands and make them feel happy.

Dr. Fatima Makki, a dentist saying that maybe she inherited her talent from her grandmother "Al Mutawaa" who where reading Holy Quraan on people to get healed.
